  1. aclinic line, magnetic equatornoun

an imaginary line paralleling the equator where a magnetic needle has no dip

  1. magnetic equatornoun

A line drawn on a map or chart connecting all points at which the magnetic inclination (dip) is zero for a specified epoch.

  1. magnetic equator

Magnetic dip, dip angle, or magnetic inclination is the angle made with the horizontal by the Earth's magnetic field lines. This angle varies at different points on the Earth's surface. Positive values of inclination indicate that the magnetic field of the Earth is pointing downward, into the Earth, at the point of measurement, and negative values indicate that it is pointing upward. The dip angle is in principle the angle made by the needle of a vertically held compass, though in practice ordinary compass needles may be weighted against dip or may be unable to move freely in the correct plane. The value can be measured more reliably with a special instrument typically known as a dip circle. Dip angle was discovered by the engineer Georg Hartmann in 1544. A method of measuring it with a dip circle was described by Robert Norman in England in 1581.

  1. magnetic equator

The magnetic equator, also known as the aclinic line, is an imaginary line around the Earth where the magnetic field is horizontal and has no vertical component. It means the needle of a magnetic compass will lie flat at this line and it should be noted that it does not align with the geographical equator. Due to the Earth's magnetic field, the magnetic equator shifts over time.

The Standard Electrical Dictionary

  1. Magnetic Equator

A locus of the earth's surface where the magnet has no tendency to dip. It is, approximately speaking, a line equally distant from the magnetic poles, and is called also the aclinic line. It is not a great circle of the earth.

Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms
