  1. Line of contact

The Line of Contact marked the farthest advance of Canadian, American, British and Soviet Armies into German controlled territory at the End of World War II in Europe. This contact began with the first meeting between Soviet and American forces at Torgau, near the Elbe river on Elbe Day, April 25, 1945. The line continued to form as American, British and Soviet forces took control of, or defeated, Nazi forces, up until he time of the May 8 unconditional surrender of Germany and beyond. This line of contact did not conform to the agreed-upon occupation zones, as stipulated in the Yalta Conference. Rather, it was simply the place where the two armies met each other. The Canadian, American and British forces had actually gone far beyond the Yalta agreement boundaries, in some cases up to two hundred miles past, going deep into the states of Mecklenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, as well as Brandenburg. The capital of Mecklenburg, the city of Schwerin, was captured on May 2, 1945. The city of Leipzig, in Saxony, was probably the largest of the cities captured by the Americans that were inside the areas to be later passed to the Soviets. The land of Thuringia was completely occupied by American forces. The completed line of contact between Canadian/US/British forces and Soviet forces began at Wismar on the Baltic coast and proceeded south, passing along Schwerin; Magdeburg; an area east of Leipzig; and on to the Czech town of Pilsen; and towards Linz in Austria.

Examples of line of contact in a Sentence

  1. Philip Breedlove:

The situation along the line of contact in Ukraine is not good. The fighting has intensified to essentially pre-agreement or pre-standdown levels and in some cases beyond.

  2. Philip Breedlove:

What we do see is that the Russian-backed forces have renewed capability now to bring pressure on the Ukrainian forces and have in several places moved the line of contact to the west and this is concerning, we are beginning to see the (heat) signatures of air defence systems and electronic warfare systems that have accompanied past Russian troop movements into Ukraine.

  3. Gianni Magazzeni:

There are increasing skirmishes taking place along the line of contact... an area where we have 800,000 people living, that gives you a very clear sense of the implications of resumed fighting especially if it's not any longer remnants of war and IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), but it is actually the use of Howitzers and other very heavy weapons.

  4. Vladimir Putin:

[ Zelensky ] doesnt look like a Ukrainian nationalist, and its hard for me to say if he can manage them, Vladimir Putin said. The question is if he can deliver what he said in public and what he considers necessary to do. I dont know if he did the right thing as president and commander-in-chief to go to the line of contact to try to persuade the people who refuse to obey his orders, Vladimir Putin said, referring to Tuesday when Zelenksy went to the Donbass region to confront protestors who wanted to stop the pullback of troops. Its not such a difficult thing to separate the conflicting sides in two villages, but it has dragged on for years and its now clear why -- because the nationalists dont want to leave and dont want to let the Ukrainian troops out.

  5. Vladimir Putin:

The Kiev authorities have given an official order to start large-scale military operations practically throughout the whole line of contact. The result is tens of killed and wounded, not only among the military on both sides but... among civilians, those who give these criminal orders are responsible.
