    The Kurukkal are a caste in Kerala, India. Originally a patrilineal community of Travancore whose traditional function was that of temple servants, they became matrilineal towards the end of the 18th century under the influence of the dominant Nambudiri Brahmin caste. The Kurukkal community has close association with culturally identical Pushpaka Unni community. In the marital relations, the offspring of Pushpaka man and Kurukkal woman were regarded as issue in a Pushpaka family and had to follow makkathyam system of Pushpakas. Similarly, the offspring of Kurukkal man and Pushpaka woman were regarded as issue in a Kurukkal family and had to follow marumakkathayam system of Kurukkals. Presently, both the communities follow makkathayam system.
