Kundu is a surname found among Indians in different states.They are believed to have been pure aryans who migrated to India.There are various theories as to their ancestors.One of the sons of revered brahmin sage Dadhichi was named Kundu, There were Kshatriyas who participated in Mahabharata war named Kundivisa. There was another revered sage named Kundu who is believed to have been deceived by lord Indra becoming feared by his powers. There are Maratha Bargi people having surname of Kundu.There are south Indian 'Kundu' brahmins. The caste of the Surname Kundu is not uniform today and differs among different states. They are mainly Jats in Punjab and Haryana, Kayastha, Vaidya and Banik in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Cooper plate inscriptions have proved that Kundus were actually Nagar Brahmins who had migrated to Bengal and who later became Kulin Vaidyas and later Kayasthas. Many people of other caste got title of Kundu by the British. Their Surname was originally Kundà (Pronounced as Kundaw) which is a sanskrit word and is derived from the 'Havan Kunda' which means the holy pit of fire of Hindus. Many people still use the original surname as it is.
