inferior mesenteric artery
The inferior mesenteric artery is a major blood vessel that arises from the abdominal aorta and supplies blood to the lower part of the large intestine, including the left half of the transverse colon, the descending colon, the sigmoid colon, and the rectum. It's the third and final branch of the abdominal aorta, which is the main artery supplying blood to the lower half of the body. Blockages or interruptions in blood flow through this artery can lead to serious digestive issues.
Wikidata
Inferior mesenteric artery
In human anatomy, the inferior mesenteric artery, often abbreviated as IMA, supplies the large intestine from the left colic flexure to the upper part of the rectum, which includes the descending colon, the sigmoid colon, and part of the rectum. Proximally, its territory of distribution overlaps with the middle colic artery, and therefore the superior mesenteric artery. The SMA and IMA anastomose via the marginal artery of the colon and via Riolan's arcade. The territory of distribution of the IMA is more or less equivalent to the embryonic hindgut.
