  1. gomphotheriidae

Gomphotheriidae is a family of extinct proboscidean mammals, more commonly known as elephants, that existed from the middle Miocene to the Holocene Epoch. They were widespread in North America, Asia, Africa and South America during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Members of this family were elephant-like in appearance but had four tusks, two on the upper jaw and two on the elongated lower jaw. The lower tusks are shaped like a shovel and were probably used for digging up food from the ground.
