In the hills of Eastern Kentucky and Appalachian, it meant as flat as anything could possibly be, but sadly I failed to ask Granny or Grandad or my father what a flitter was defined as up there. Now I’m 82 and still say flat as a flitter, but I can’t explain to anyone asking what a flitter is, or was 100 years ago in Lackey Kentucky.
Flat as a flitter
Etymology: It must have been handed down through generations of the Scotch-Irish settlers (such as my family) in Appalachia. Presumably from Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Scots, Old Norse, Old/Middle English or Old/Middle French from the Normans.
