These drugs are commonly referred to as "anthranilic acid derivatives" or "fenamates" because fenamic acid is a derivative of anthranilic acid.: 235 : 17 Fenamic acid can be synthesized from 2-chlorobenzoic acid and can be converted into acridone.

This compound may be synthesized by the reaction of 2-chlorobenzoic acid and aniline, with base and copper oxide catalyst in the Goldberg reaction. The self-condensation of fenamic acid yields acridone.
