They are known for their stinging hairs filled with irritating chemical compounds, which can cause irritations when touched. Members of this family can be found worldwide, with most species in the tropics, and vary from small annual herbs to large trees. Species in this family produce small flowers and fruits which are primarily wind-pollinated. The most well-known member of this family is the stinging nettle. Other notable members include the parasitic plant, Pilea microphylla, and the giant nettle, which can grow up to 3m tall.
