    Europium is a chemical element with the symbol Eu and atomic number 63. It is a soft, silvery-white, highly reactive metal and is part of the lanthanide series of the periodic table. Europium is used primarily for its unique properties in lighting, television and screen technologies. Its compounds are also often used as red and blue phosphors and it is commonly used in fluorescent lamps and color TVs to enhance the production of red tones.

Europium has no significant biological role and is relatively non-toxic compared to other heavy metals. Most applications of europium exploit the phosphorescence of europium compounds.
