It ranks 28th on the Global Competitiveness Report. Per the Global Innovation Index in 2022, China was ranked 11th, 3rd in Asia & Oceania region and 2nd for countries with a population of over 100 million. China's economy is both a contributor to rising global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions causing climate change and severely affected by its adverse impacts. Although China is not the main source of historical cumulative emissions, it today accounts for 27 percent of annual global carbon dioxide and a third of the world’s greenhouse gases emissions. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its relatively carbon-intensive industrial economy will create economic transition risks but also open new opportunities for development. At the same time, large parts of China’s population and economic infrastructure are heavily exposed to climate risks.
