  1. Depiction

Depiction is a form of non-verbal representation in which two-dimensional images are regarded as viable substitutes for things seen, remembered or imagined. Basically, a picture maps an object to a two-dimensional scheme or picture plane. Pictures are made with various materials and techniques, such as painting, drawing, or prints mosaics, tapestries, stained glass, and collages of unusual and disparate elements. Occasionally pictures may occur in simple inkblots, accidental stains, peculiar clouds or a glimpse of the moon, but these are special cases. Sculpture and performances are sometimes said to depict but this arises where depiction is taken to include all reference that is not linguistic or notational. The bulk of research in depiction however deals only in pictures. While sculpture and performance clearly represent or refer, they do not strictly picture their objects. Pictures may be factual or fictional, literal or metaphorical, realistic or idealised and in various combination. Idealised depiction is also termed schematic or stylised and extends to icons, diagrams and maps. Classes or styles of picture may abstract their objects by degrees, conversely, establish degrees of the concrete. Stylisation can lead to the fully abstract picture, where reference is only to conditions for a picture plane – a severe exercise in self-reference and ultimately a sub-set of pattern.

I appreciated the depiction of suicide as a process. There is no singular cause for suicide, and the show depicted the cumulative effect of multiple life experiences leading up to Hannah's suicide. Even though I don't like that the show sometimes vilified the people in the tapes as the 'reasons' why Hannah killed herself, one narrative that has been lost in the controversy about this show is the belief by some of the characters that things had to get better, they had to care and treat one another better.

  3. Jason Wahler:

I had everything in society the depiction was amazing -- I had money ; I had fame ; I had cars ; I had access and all this stuff, but I would be at my house -- at my own party with a couple hundred people -- in the bathroom, snorting cocaine and walk out with a beer and pretend everything was okay, in reality everything was so miserable, and I could n’t figure out why because I had everything everyone was trying to get.

  4. Jonathan Karl:

All Americans should condemn this depiction of violence directed toward journalists and the president's political opponents, we have previously told the president his rhetoric could incite violence. Now we call on him and everybody associated with this conference to denounce this video and affirm that violence has no place in our society.

  5. Jonathan Karl:

The WHCA is horrified by a video reportedly shown over the weekend at a political conference organized by the president's supporters, all Americans should condemn this depiction of violence directed toward journalists and the president's political opponents.
