Wikidata

  1. Dentate gyrus

The dentate gyrus is part of the hippocampal formation. It is thought to contribute to the formation of new episodic memories, the spontaneous exploration of novel environments, and other functions. It is notable as being one of a select few brain structures currently known to have high rates of neurogenesis in adult rats. The molecular layer of dentate gyrus granule neurons receive the hippocampal formation's major excitatory input from the cortex. This input is primarily derived from layer II of the entorhinal cortex and enables the dentate gyrus to gate information flow into the hippocampus trisynaptic loop.

U.S. National Library of Medicine

  1. Dentate Gyrus

Gray matter situated above the gyrus hippocampi. It is composed of three layers. The molecular layer is continuous with the HIPPOCAMPUS in the hippocampal fissure. The granular layer consists of closely arranged spherical or oval neurons, called granule cells, whose AXONS pass through the polymorphic layer ending on the DENDRITES of pyramidal cells in the hippocampus.
