Chapman codes are a set of 3-letter codes used in genealogy to identify the administrative divisions in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Chapman code
Chapman codes are a set of 3-letter codes identifying administrative divisions in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, covering areas which at the time of the code's creation were both extant and historical. They were created by Dr. Colin R Chapman in the late 1970s, and are widely used in genealogy which follows the common practice of describing areas in terms of the counties existing from the 19th into the 20th century, avoiding the confusions caused by such as the series of changes consequent upon the creation of unitary authorities in England and the modern fashion of creating local authorities whose names are often not well matched to the established names of the areas which they serve. They have no postal relevance and are not used by the Royal Mail.
