Black Legendnoun
The anti-Hispanic Black Legend (Spanish: Leyenda Negra) is the depiction of Spain and Spaniards as bloodthirsty and cruel, greedy and fanatical with the intention of defaming the country of Spain and its inhabitants. The term was later extended to include all Hispanics and their countries of origin, in particular the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America, as well as persons residing in the United States of America of Spanish or Spanish-speaking Latin American descent.
Etymology: The term was coined by Julián Juderías in his 1914 book La leyenda negra y la verdad histórica (The Black Legend and Historical Truth).
Wikipedia
Black legend
A black legend is a historiographical phenomenon in which a sustained trend in historical writing of biased reporting and introduction of fabricated, exaggerated and/or decontextualized facts is directed against particular persons, nations or institutions with the intention of creating a distorted and uniquely inhuman image of them while hiding their positive contributions to history. The term was first used by French writer Arthur Lévy in his 1893 work Napoléon Intime, in contrast to the expression "Golden Legend" that had been in circulation around Europe since the publication of a book of that name during the Middle Ages.Black legends have been perpetrated against many nations and cultures, usually as a result of propaganda and xenophobia. For example, the "Spanish Black Legend" (Spanish: La leyenda negra española) is the theory that anti-Spanish political propaganda, whether about Spain, the Spanish Empire or Hispanic America, was sometimes "absorbed and converted into broadly held stereotypes" that assumed that Spain was "uniquely evil".

Black Legend
The Black Legend is a phrase used to describe the anti-Spanish historical propaganda created by writers of Spanish rival powers starting in the 16th century, thought to counter Spain's increasing influence and power on the world stage. According to one historian, this propaganda depicts Spain or the Spanish Empire as "cruel, bigoted, exploitative and self-righteous in excess of reality." The term was coined by Julián Juderías in his 1914 book La leyenda negra y la verdad histórica. Deriving from the Spanish example, the term "black legend" is sometimes used in a more general way to describe any form of unjustified demonization of a historical person, people or sequence of events. A more pro-Spanish historiographical school emerged as a reaction, especially within Spain, but also in the Americas. The style which describes Spanish history in an exaggeratedly favorable manner has been referred to as the White legend.
