    A plant.

    Etymology: betonica, Lat.

    The leaves are green, rough, and crenated on the edges: the flowers are disposed in a spike; the upper crest of the flower is advanced, and divided into two segments; the beard, or lower part of the flower, is divided into three, and the middle segment is bifid; each flower is, for the most part, succeeded by four naked seeds. The species are,
    1. Common or wood betony.
    2. Betony, with a white flower.
    3. Greater Danish betony. The first is very common in woods and shady places, and is greatly esteemed as a vulnerary herb. Philip Miller.
