Wikipedia
Ballistic missile
A ballistic missile is a type of missile that uses projectile motion to deliver warheads on a target. These weapons are powered only during relatively brief periods—most of the flight is unpowered. Short-range ballistic missiles stay within the Earth's atmosphere, while intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are launched on a sub-orbital flight. These weapons are in a distinct category from cruise missiles, which are aerodynamically guided in powered flight. Unlike cruise missiles, which are restricted to the atmosphere, it is advantageous for ballistic missiles to avoid the denser parts of the atmosphere and they may travel above the atmosphere into outer space.

ballistic missile
A ballistic missile is a type of missile that follows a ballistic trajectory path when delivering its payload. Once it is launched, it is propelled into the upper layers of the atmosphere and then descends towards its determined target. It can carry conventional high explosives or a nuclear, biological, or chemical warhead. It differs from cruise missiles which are guided and propelled for the whole course of their flight.

Ballistic missile
A ballistic missile is a missile that follows a ballistic flightpath with the objective of delivering one or more warheads to a predetermined target. Shorter range ballistic missiles stay within the Earth's atmosphere, while longer range ones are designed to spend some of their flight time above the atmosphere and are thus considered sub-orbital.

Examples of ballistic missile in a Sentence
There's a lot of chaos around us depending on the war zone. Sometimes it's rocket fire, sometimes it's a ballistic missile, sometimes it's small arms fire, and you got to breathe, you've got to relax, understand that if you're panicking, or you're running around, you can't get the story out. And you also have to remember that people are relying on you to give them a clear picture of what's happening on the ground. They understand there's chaos, they understand that Russia has invaded a sovereign country, so how do we distill this down in a way that people can grasp but then ultimately care about?

Russian President Vladimir Putin:
This is not a defense system. This is part of U.S. nuclear strategic potential brought onto a periphery. In this case, Eastern Europe is such periphery, until now, those taking such decisions have lived in calm, fairly well-off and in safety. Now, as these elements of ballistic missile defense are deployed, we are forced to think how to neutralize emerging threats to the Russian Federation.
