australopithecus africanus
Australopithecus africanus is an extinct species of the australopithecines, the first of the early hominids to exhibit significant bipedal locomotion, which is movement on two legs. This species existed in southern Africa between about 2 million and 3 million years ago. It was noted for having a combination of human-like and ape-like features, with a relatively small brain size akin to a modern chimpanzee, but with teeth and jaw structures more similar to later hominid species. It is considered a crucial link in the evolutionary chain leading to modern humans.

Australopithecus africanus
Australopithecus africanus was an early hominid, an australopithecine, who lived between ~3.03 and 2.04 million years ago in the later Pliocene and early Pleistocene. In common with the older Australopithecus afarensis, Au. africanus was of slender build, or gracile, and was thought to have been a direct ancestor of modern humans. Fossil remains indicate that Au. africanus was significantly more like modern humans than Au. afarensis, with a more human-like cranium permitting a larger brain and more humanoid facial features. Au. africanus has been found at only four sites in southern Africa — Taung, Sterkfontein, Makapansgat and Gladysvale.
