Wikidata

  1. Armenian Highland

The Armenian Highland is the central-most and highest of three land-locked plateaus that together form the northern sector of the Middle East. To its west is the Anatolian plateau which rises slowly from the lowland coast of the Aegean Sea and rises to an average height of 3,000 feet. In Armenia, the average height rises dramatically from 3,000 feet to 7,000 feet. To its southeast is the Iranian plateau, where the elevation drops rapidly to an average 2,000 feet to 5,000 feet above sea level. The Armenians are the largest ethnic group native to the region. They have traditionally inhabited throughout the highland, but Armenians in the eastern parts of the region were exterminated during the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman government. Today, Armenians form majority only in parts of the highland.
