"Ya et fan cami per on pases, sens que dexes res exut, lo trebol, lo poliol, lo albalat, y almoraduix. Ya lo mandastre oloros te fa la garlanda a nuchs, y perque no te la furten te la guarda el atzanbuig." (Valencian lyric poem, 1614 A.D.) [3] SALCEDO Y LOAYZA, Domingo. Relación de la vida, muerte y milagros del V. Mos. Fr. Hieronimo Simón. Segorbe: Felipe Mey, 1614, Pages: 193-197, verses 47 & 48. Signature (BNE) 3/24515.
Etymology: From the Visigothic word 'albalat', 'field or valley of thistles' [1] and originally derived from the Latin term 'albalatus' (contraction of the root 'alb-' and 'alatus': 'albus alatus') 'of white wing, white winged'. [2] At the dawn of the 17th century, 'albalat' was the phytonym in the Valencian language of this herbaceous species; it is documented with this name the land covered with thistles on the banks of the lower course of the river Turia [3] and the middle course of the river Palancia [1]. Likewise, the primitive heraldry of the noble Albalat lineage, located in the Eastern Strip of the Kingdom of Aragon in the late 12th century, a half flight of silver ('white wing') in azure field occurs in their coat of arms as heraldic figure [4], documented in 1172 [5]. During the 13th century, the Albalat lineage expanded throughout the Principality of Catalonia and the Kingdom of Valencia [6]; the common noun 'albalat', then, became a word composed of the adjective 'alb' ('white') [7] and the past participle 'alat' ('winged') both in the Catalan and Valencian languages.
