I always wonder were developers come up with a name for an app. I think What’sapp, which a lot of people in foreign countries pronounce what’s up, is in a way slang for “what’s happening with you?” Or “give me an update on yourself!” Or “look, this is what is happening in my day!” (Like When you enclose a picture). Generally what friend or associates might say to each other -- like what’s Appening?

  • IMO, an acronym WAM could be used for a What'sApp Message to distinguish this unpaid short text message from a paid phone-transmitted short text message (SMS). Any pro?

  • In Mexico where I live, the word WhatsApp has become a very used word in conversational Spanish among the young and not too young people or generation. There is even an attempt at making it into a verb and people usually say "whatsappear" meaning that you are chatting by using WhatsApp
