    Richmond are a value brand of tobacco cigarettes re-introduced into UK markets in 1999. They come in the following varieties: Regular, Gold and Menthol - all three in King Size and Superking sizes. The brand is in competition at the lower end of the market, against value UK cigarette brands such as Mayfair, Sovereign and Park Road. Richmond's variants Superkings and King Size are the fourth and fifth top-selling cigarettes in the UK respectively. They are characterised by the bright blue packaging, which in early 2006 underwent a redesign: the serif font used being replaced for a more modern sans-serif, and general appearance becoming more minimalist. In 2008, new limited edition packs of Richmond cigarettes were released under the name "Chill Edition". In 2011, Richmond cigarette packaging across the brand varieties was updated, with the introduction of tactile feeback packaging experimented with in the 2008 Chill Edition packaging. In August 2011, the Richmond brand introduced a new variant. 'Richmond Superslims' follow in the wider introduction to the UK tobacco products market of 'demi-slim' cigarettes, such as British American Tobacco's Vogue Perle brand.

W. of London; picturesquely situated on the summit and slope of Richmond Hill, and the right bank of the Thames; has remains of the royal palace of Sheen, a magnificent deer park, a handsome river bridge, &c.; supplies London with fruit and vegetables; has many literary and historical associations. 3, Capital (85) of Virginia, U.S.; has a hilly and picturesque site on the James River, 116 m. S. of Washington; possesses large docks, and is a busy port, a manufacturing town (tobacco, iron-works, flour and paper mills), and a railway centre; as the Confederate capital it was the scene of a memorable, year-long siege during the Civil War, ultimately falling into the hands of Grant and Sheridan in 1865.

In June, 1861, it was selected as the Confederate capital, and from that period was the objective-point of a series of formidable military expeditions for its capture, under Gens. McDowell, McClellan, Burnside, Hooker, Meade, and Grant, and defended by Gen. Lee with a large army and formidable lines of fortifications, until the seizure of the lines of supply by Gens. Grant and Sheridan compelled its evacuation after a series of sanguinary battles, April 3, 1865. A considerable portion of the city was destroyed by the retreating Confederates.

    When Edward I. built himself a sumptuous palace on the south bank of the Thames he gave it the name of Sheen, the Saxon for “resplendent.” This being consumed by fire in 1479, Henry VI., rebuilt it, and then called it Richmond, after the beautiful seat in Yorkshire whence he took the title of his earldom. Richmond signifies a rich prospect from the hill occupied by its ancient castle.
