The city is known for its grand architecture, particularly its impressive palaces and monumental staircases. The term 'Persepolis' is Greek, meaning ‘Persian city.’ The ruins of Persepolis were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The name also refers to a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, which is a memoir about her childhood and early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution.

In the later times of the Mohammedan rule, the fortress of Istakhr seems to have occupied the place of Persepolis.
