Wikidata

  1. Persona

A persona, in the word's everyday usage, is a social role or a character played by an actor. The word is derived from Latin, where it originally referred to a theatrical mask. The Latin word probably derived from the Etruscan word "phersu", with the same meaning, and that from the Greek πρόσωπον. Its meaning in the latter Roman period changed to indicate a "character" of a theatrical performance or court of law, when it became apparent that different individuals could assume the same role, and legal attributes such as rights, powers, and duties followed the role. The same individuals as actors could play different roles, each with its own legal attributes, sometimes even in the same court appearance.

Chambers 20th Century Dictionary

  1. Persona

pėr-sō′na, n. a person.—Persona grata, a person who is acceptable to those to whom he is sent.—Dramatis personæ, the characters in a play or story. [L.]

Examples of PERSONA in a Sentence

  1. Gilberto Valle:

Valle gave Mangan full custody of their daughter while he was ensnared in the cannibalism fantasy case. Following his exoneration, he filed court papers in Nevada -- where Mangan now lives -- seeking visitation with his daughter. But Valle decided to drop the case last month after a judge told him he must pay his ex-wife’s attorney fees, the Daily News reported late Sunday. Valle admitted to spending $50,000 so far on the legal battle, and said he couldn’t afford any more. I've been completely cleared but that doesn't mean my life is back to normal, this is going to stick with me for the rest of my life. He added: I argued it's in the child's best interest to have a father. Kathleen argued, 'He might murder my daughter.' I don't think she really thinks that. The newspaper said Mangan and her lawyer are not responding to requests for comment. We have great concern that Ms. Mangan will be forced into a co-parenting relationship with a man who will continue to traumatize her through his very public persona as the 'Cannibal Cop,' her attorney had previously written in court papers. Valle, who now reportedly works in construction, recentlypublished his first book.

  2. Larry Wilmore:

I don't always feel like I have to have a strong opinion about something, sometimes I'm agnostic about an issue and my whole thing is to try and get more information. That's part of my comic persona, too. I call myself a passionate centrist, which means half the time I disagree with myself.

  3. RJ Intindola:

Every so often deliberately participate in inappropriate behavior, but don’t tell anyone. In this way, your public persona shall remain intact.

  4. George Hamilton:

Theyre given an unusual amount of credibility, a lot of young actors do it and they shouldnt. The political [people] are happy to use your persona. I think its unfair to the voter.

  5. Jonathan Greenberg:

He figured out what he had to do in order to deceive me and get onto that list. And he did it very well. And he maintained that persona of just sort of talking about his assets without any sense of debt and lying about it.
