Wikipedia

  1. obroni

Oborɔnyi is the Akan (or more specifically, the Fante) word for foreigner, literally meaning "those who come from over the horizon." It is often colloquially translated into "white person."West Africa does not have an equivalent of the ubiquitous "mzungu", used throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, and even within Ghana, "oborɔnyi" predominates because it is common to the predominant local languages, those of Akan family, primarily Fante, Akuapem Twi and Asante twi. Other Akan languages employ variants on "oborɔnyi": For example, the Ashantes use the term "Broni" or "Aborɔfo", and Northern Ghana uses a more complex pastiche of terms: "gbampielli", "pielli", "siliminga" (Dagbani and other Gur languages), "bature", "baturiya" (Hausa language), "nasaara" (Arabic loanword used by some Muslims literally meaning "Christian"), "toubab" (Mande languages), among other terms.

  1. Obroni

Obroni is the Ashanti word for a white person, but sometimes used to refer to foreigners in general. The word is often used by Ghanaians in the diaspora, when speaking amongst themselves, as a "code" word for "white man". Despite the widespread and casual use of the word, its origins are not entirely benign. The word "obroni" derives from the word "Abro fuo", which means trickster, "one who frustrates" or "one who cannot be trusted". It is possible that the word arose during initial contact of the Ashantis and Europeans. Coincidentally, the word for "white person" used by the Ga, is Blofonyo for short. This word also derives from "Ablo fo nyo", which again means "one who frustrates", or a trickster. West Africa does not have an equivalent of the ubiquitous ‘mzungu’, used throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, and even within Ghana, Obroni predominates because it is common to the predominant local languages, those of Akan family, primarily Ashanti Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante. Other Akan languages employ variants on Obroni: For example Western Ghana, uses the term ‘Brofo’ or ‘Brofwe’. This variation is evidence of the common origins of the word however, likely from ‘Abro ni/fuor’ meaning ‘wicked person/people’ in Twi. Another suggested etymology is from ‘boro’ meaning ‘horizon’, with ‘O-boro-ni’ meaning someone from the lands beyond the horizon.
