Wikipedia

  1. legislatures

A legislature is an assembly with the authority to make laws for a political entity such as a country or city. They are often contrasted with the executive and judicial powers of government. Laws enacted by legislatures are usually known as primary legislation. In addition, legislatures may observe and steer governing actions, with authority to amend the budget involved. The members of a legislature are called legislators. In a democracy, legislators are most commonly popularly elected, although indirect election and appointment by the executive are also used, particularly for bicameral legislatures featuring an upper chamber.

Examples of Legislatures in a Sentence

  1. Timothy Lytton:

Court opinions like this are not likely to move legislatures, the federal government has been at a stalemate over gun control legislation for well over a decade. If Sandy Hook could not move Congress to action, nothing is likely to.

  2. Kris Brown:

We have chapters across the country and have been very active in educating legislatures in appropriate gun policy and seeking to advance enacting of laws.

  3. Andy Biggs:

Stage legislatures were having difficulties sometimes with their executive office of the governors, they were fighting the federal government, whether it be with mandated lockdowns or implied mandated lockdowns...and having served in the state legislature in Arizona for a while, it seemed to me we spend so much time responding to federal issues, it would be good if we could get some synergy back and forth and open up communication that might be more direct between the Freedom Caucus and conservative members of Congress and the conservative members of the state legislatures, we grappled with how best to do that, and once we came to this idea that we should have state affiliated freedom caucuses, and then the question was how do you implement, how do you create the infrastructure to do that, and that's what we've been working on for quite some time.

  4. Jessica Levinson:

Trump thinks ‘our country is going to hell.’ Well, there is likely little more than a chance in hell that we are going to amend the Constitution, amending the Constitution is one of the most serious things that lawmakers can do. Therefore the path to doing it is rightfully arduous. I would put the chances … as beyond a longshot. To be sure, changing the Constitution, the supreme law of the land, would require a two-thirds vote in Congress, then ratification from three-fourths of state legislatures. It could also be changed through a constitutional convention in which at least 34 states convene to vote on an amendment, which would then need ratification from a minimum 38 states. Trump since announcing his candidacy in mid-June has made illegal immigrants from Mexico a top concern and has suggested several solutions -- including a wall along the southern border and the change to birthright citizenship.

  5. Daniel Squadron:

If we don't make progress in state legislatures through this work, there's a question whether the Democratic presidential candidate should spend a dime in these states in 2024.
