Indy Racing League, LLC, doing business as IndyCar (stylized INDYCAR), is an American-based auto racing sanctioning body for Indy car racing and other disciplines of open wheel car racing. The organization sanctions four racing series: the premier IndyCar Series with its centerpiece the Indianapolis 500, and developmental series Indy Lights, the Pro Mazda Championship and the U.S. F2000 National Championship, which are all a part of The Road To Indy. IndyCar is recognized as a member organization of the FIA through ACCUS. The sanctioning body was formed in 1994 under the name Indy Racing League, and began competition in 1996. The trademark name INDYCAR was officially adopted on January 1, 2011. The sport of open-wheel car racing itself, also historically referred to as Championship Car racing or Indy racing, traces its roots to as early as 1905. It is the fourth major sanctioning body to govern the sport of Indy car racing, following AAA, USAC, and Champ Car. IndyCar is owned by Hulman & Company, which also owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway complex and the Clabber Girl brand.

Examples of IndyCar in a Sentence

  1. Jimmie Johnson:

We’re still in this phase with IndyCar, sports car or any other ideas I have to go racing. Everything right now is people are just starting to talk about options, it’s usually end of summer, beginning of fall when paper starts moving around and people are looking to ink stuff and get it done. We’re just early in the cycle, and I’m certainly trying to keep my options open.

  2. Bryan Herta:

When he first moved to IndyCar, people used to ask me if I thought he was better than I was, but no one asks anymore, that’s OK. I’m good with that.

  3. Colton Herta:

It's been a good test to see what these cars are about and the physicality differences to an IndyCar, it's a goal of mine and has been for a while. There's been instances where I've been close. But what's going on with this, it's just getting seat time. I wanted to see what these cars are all about and luckily McLaren gave me a chance.

  4. Pippa Mann:

Sigh. #HereWeGoAgain, perhaps someone should remind him that @IndyCar doesn't have power steering, and we're strong enough to drive those.

  5. Sam Schmidt:

This is probably the most fun and less stress that I'll see all day, being on the stand is not as fun as this. To have a little confirmation from a guy like Mario (Andretti) and our drivers is fantastic. It speaks volumes. In the IndyCar Series it's a team effort and this is a team effort with this group of engineers. It's pretty nice to being to drive this car again.
