giardia
Giardia is a genus of single-celled, flagellated parasites that live in the intestines of several vertebrates, including humans, causing a gastrointestinal disease known as giardiasis. These parasites reproduce by division and can survive outside of the host in a hard-shelled cyst form. Transmission usually occurs via ingestion of Giardia cysts in contaminated water or food, or direct contact with an infected individual. The disease is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and fatigue.
