  1. Empire

The term empire derives from the Latin imperium. Politically, an empire is a geographically extensive group of states and peoples united and ruled either by a monarch or an oligarchy. Aside from the traditional usage, the term empire can be used in an extended sense to denote a large-scale business enterprise, or a political organisation of either national-, regional- or city scale, controlled either by a person or a group authority. An imperial political structure is established and maintained in two ways: as a territorial empire of direct conquest and control with force, and as a coercive, hegemonic empire of indirect conquest and control with power. The former provides greater tribute and direct political control, yet limits further expansion because it absorbs military forces to fixed garrisons. The latter provides less tribute and indirect control, but avails military forces for further expansion. Territorial empires tended to be contiguous areas. The term on occasion has been applied to maritime empires or thalassocracies, with looser structures and more scattered territories.

Men of strong minds and who think for themselves, should not be discouraged on finding occasionally that some of their best ideas have been anticipated by former writers; they will neither anathematize others nor despair themselves. They will rather go on discovering things before discovered, until they are rewarded with a land hitherto unknown, an empire indisputably their own, both right of conquest and of discovery.

  2. John Piper:

The Apostle Paul is probably writing to be read by government officials as well as by the church in Rome, the Apostle Paul knows that this letter will find its way into Caesar's household and into the hands of the civil authorities. The Apostle Paul wants them to understand two truths. One is that Christians are not out to overthrow the empire politically by claiming Jesus, and not Caesar, is Lord.

The world will not allow Beijing to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire. America stands with our Southeast Asia allies and partners in protecting their sovereign rights to offshore resources, consistent with their rights and obligations under international law.

  5. June Jordan:

All of Western tradition, from the late bloom of the British Empire right through the early doom of Vietnam, dictates that you do something spectacular and irreversible whenever you find yourself in or whenever you impose yourself upon a wholly unfamiliar situation belonging to somebody else. Frequently it's your soul or your honor or your manhood, or democracy itself, at stake.
