Deuteronomy, Book of Deuteronomynoun
the fifth book of the Old Testament; contains a second statement of Mosaic law
Wiktionary
Deuteronomynoun
The fifth of the Books of Moses in the Old Testament of the Bible, the fifth book in the Torah.
Etymology: From the name which the book bears in the Septuagint (Δευτερονόμιον and in the Vulgate Deuteronomium). This is based upon the erroneous Septuagint rendering of משנה התורה הזאת (xvii. 18), which grammatically can mean only "a repetition [that is, a copy] of this law," but which is rendered by the Septuagint τὸ Δευτερουόμιου τοῦτο, as though the expression meant "this repetition of the law."
Samuel Johnson's Dictionary
Deuteronomynoun
The second book of the law, being the book of Moses.
Etymology: δέυτεϱος νομος.

Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy (Ancient Greek: Δευτερονόμιον, romanized: Deuteronómion, lit. 'second law') is the fifth and last book of the Torah (in Judaism), where it is called Devarim (Hebrew: דְּבָרִים, Dəḇārīm, '[the] words [of Moses]') and the fifth book of the Christian Old Testament. Chapters 1–30 of the book consist of three sermons or speeches delivered to the Israelites by Moses on the Plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land. The first sermon recounts the forty years of wilderness wanderings which had led to that moment, and ends with an exhortation to observe the law. The second sermon reminds the Israelites of the need to follow Yahweh and the laws (or teachings) he has given them, on which their possession of the land depends. The third sermon offers the comfort that, even should the nation of Israel prove unfaithful and so lose the land, with repentance all can be restored. The final four chapters (31–34) contain the Song of Moses, the Blessing of Moses, and the narratives recounting the passing of the mantle of leadership from Moses to Joshua and, finally, the death of Moses on Mount Nebo. One of its most significant verses is Deuteronomy 6:4, the Shema Yisrael, which has been described as the definitive statement of Jewish identity for theistic Jews: "Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one." Verses 6:4–5 were also quoted by Jesus in Mark 12:28–34 as the Great Commandment.

deuteronomy
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Christian Old Testament and the Jewish Torah. This book is primarily a restatement and reaffirmation of the Law of Moses, including the Ten Commandments. It is presented as a series of sermons given by Moses before his death, instructing the Israelites on how to follow God and live righteously in the Promised Land. The name "Deuteronomy" is derived from the Greek for "second law," signifying its role in revisiting the law given in earlier books.

Deuteronomy
dū-tėr-on′o-mi, or dū′tėr-on-o-mi, n. the fifth book of the Pentateuch, containing a repetition of the decalogue and laws given in Exodus.—adjs. Deuteronom′ic, -al.—ns. Deuteron′omist, Deu′tero-Isā′iah, the assumed author of the later prophecies of Isaiah. [Gr. deuteros, second, nomos, law.]
The Nuttall Encyclopedia
Deuteronomy
the fifth book of the Pentateuch, and so called as the re-statement and re-enforcement, as it were, by Moses of the Divine law proclaimed in the wilderness. The Mosaic authorship of this book is now called in question, though it is allowed to be instinct with the spirit of the religion instituted by Moses, and it is considered to have been conceived at a time when that religion with its ritual was established in Jerusalem, in order to confirm faith in the Divine origin and sanction of observances there.
