The Standard Electrical Dictionary

  1. Circuit

A conducting path for electric currents properly forming a complete path with ends joined and including generally a generating device of some kind. Part of the conduction may be true and part electrolytic. (See Electrolytic Conduction.) The term has become extended, so that the term is often applied to any portion of a circuit conveniently considered by itself. The simplest example of a complete circuit would be a circular conductor. If rotated in the earth's field so as to cut its lines of force a current would go through it, and it would be an electric circuit. Another example is a galvanic battery with its ends connected by a wire. Here the battery generates the current which, by electrolytic conduction, goes through the battery and by true conduction through the wire. For an example of a portion of a circuit spoken of as "a circuit" see Circuit, Astatic.

Examples of CIRCUIT in a Sentence

  1. Mitch McConnell:

Our colleague is not trying to conclude an unending discussion that he cannot stop, he’s trying to short-circuit a debate that he cannot win, this is just the kind of short-sighted power grab this body was actually built to stop.

  2. Erick Arnoldson:

We have developed software to improve battery life to two years. Water completes the circuit, so when our bait is out of the water, it turns off. With the new software, our baits also detect movement. Now, even when submerged, if there is a long period without movement, the bait goes into a deep sleep.

  3. Molly Levinson:

The argument that women gave up a right to equal pay by accepting the best collective bargaining agreement possible in response to the Federation's refusal to put equal pay on the table is not a legitimate reason for continuing to discriminate against them, today, we are filing a motion to allow us to appeal immediately the district court's decision so that Ninth Circuit will be able to review these claims.

  4. Jeff Sessions:

We've got cases moving in the very, very liberal Ninth Circuit, who, they've been hostile to the order, we won a case in Virginia recently that was a nicely-written order that just demolished, I thought, all the arguments that some of the other people have been making. We are confident that the President will prevail on appeal and particularly in the Supreme Court, if not the Ninth Circuit. So this is a huge matter. I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the President of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and Constitutional power.

  5. Erik Jaffe:

You can’t short-circuit the ordinary steps of judicial review for serious constitutional questions.
