It was written by Spears alongside the song's producers Brian Kierulf and Josh Schwartz. The song was released on June 21, 2002, by Jive Records, as the fifth single from the album, exclusive to France. "Anticipating" is a disco, dance-pop, and teen pop song, influenced by R&B. Lyrically, the song is about friendship and camaraderie between women.
