Wikipedia

  1. Anopheles

Anopheles () is a genus of mosquito first described and named by J. W. Meigen in 1818. About 460 species are recognised; while over 100 can transmit human malaria, only 30–40 commonly transmit parasites of the genus Plasmodium, which cause malaria in humans in endemic areas. Anopheles gambiae is one of the best known, because of its predominant role in the transmission of the most dangerous malaria parasite species (to humans) – Plasmodium falciparum. The name comes from the Ancient Greek word ἀνωφελής anōphelḗs 'useless', derived from ἀν- an-, 'not', 'un-' and ὄφελος óphelos 'profit'.Mosquitoes in other genera (Aedes, Culex, Culiseta, Haemagogus, and Ochlerotatus) can also serve as vectors of disease agents, but not human malaria.

  1. anopheles

Anopheles is a genus of mosquitoes that includes approximately 460 species, several of which are known to transmit human malaria. Females of these species are the ones that bite and transmit pathogens. This genus is also known to transmit canine heartworm and the viral encephalitides. The Anopheles mosquito can be identified by their typical resting position: they rest with their abdomen sticking up in the air rather than parallel to the surface on which they are resting.

Some species of Anopheles also can serve as the vectors for canine heartworm Dirofilaria immitis, the filariasis-causing species Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi, and viruses such as one that causes O'nyong'nyong fever. An association of brain tumor incidence and malaria suggests the Anopheles might transmit a virus or other agent that could cause a brain tumor. Mosquitoes in other genera can also serve as vectors of disease agents, but not malaria.

Examples of Anopheles in a Sentence

  1. Lynn Goldman:

Basically the anopheles likes to rest on a wall surface between feedings and thus is poisoned by the DDT that is on the walls, also there are insecticide impregnated bed nets -- usually with pyrethroids, and, infrequently, with DDT -- to guard against malaria transmission while sleeping. Bed nets also are very effective.

  2. Professor Robert Jackson:

Evarcha culicivora has a particular hankering for Anopheles mosquitoes – the very mosquitoes notorious for being malaria vectors, this little spider is a predator that likes us and eats our enemies.
