It originates from several major tributaries in the North Maine Woods, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Penobscot Bay. Its drainage basin is a key area for outdoor recreational activities and the river itself is an essential part of the regional economy, supporting commercial fishing and previously important for log driving during the lumber industry boom.
