  1. Panagia

Panagia (Greek: Παναγία, fem. of panágios, pan- + hágios, the All-Holy, or the Most Holy; pronounced Greek pronunciation: [panaˈʝia]) (also transliterated Panaghia or Panajia), in Medieval and Modern Greek, is one of the titles of Mary, mother of Jesus, used especially in Eastern Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity. Most Greek churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary are called Panagia; the standard western Christian designation of "St. Mary" is rarely used in the Orthodox East, as Mary is considered the holiest of all created beings and therefore of higher status than the Saints.

Panagia is a greek word meaning the Holiest (of all saints). It passed later, with the evangelisation of Bulgars and Serbs and after that of Russians, in slavic languages, in which it is employed for churches dedicated to Her or for a special type of icons representing Her with the Christ still inside Her, before He is born. In slavic languages, the usual word for Her is Bogorodica (Mother of God, translation of the greek Theotokos).
