arti | No cigar on this one. The two outstanding definitions of the term 'arti' are 1) in Sanskrit and the Hindu religion , it is refers to the Ceremony of light and a 'light that removes the darkness''; in classical Greek (ἄρτι) it means the immediate or present moment, what we would refer to as "The Now" when using 'now' as a noun rather than an adverb. What is interesting about the two definitions is that they both embrace the idea of moments of enlightenment, of "Getting It!" as we might say in English. The Greeks embraced this in their concept of life as a successive experience of such moments which they referred to as 'kairos' ( καιρός), the opportune, essential or immediate moment. It was contrasted with the term aevum (αἰϝών) that designates the temporal realm of the spirit, or afterlife existence of the soul our beings such as angels. |
