Vietnam Warthis war, like any war, is a means of population control--I think Malthus might agree on this point... To be serious though, there is a small stone monument in The Bronx, NY, with words attributed to President Johnson:: "A WAR WE CAN'T WIN, AND WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE". pity.
American Civil WarAccording to Alexis de Tocqueville, a French historian and sociologist, It was a REVOLUTION, since it involved a new constitution replacing the already-existing one...I told this to my American History professor in NY, sixty years ago, to which he replied, "What did he know, he was French" ...
Artificial Intelligencebasically, a computer programme that is so complex that it is pretty much incomprehensible, once written...there was almost a nuclear war between the U.S. and the USSR in the 1980's, due to a screw-up in Russia's AI...(see HELLO WORLD, by a British mathematician...) etc, etc, etc.
Great DepressionAccording tNouriel Roubini, economist, known as "Dr. Doom" for his accurate predictions of financial/economic crises, it's what happened 90 years ago, and will begin about 2025, only worse. Check it out...
CanadaYou don't want my definition..Come here, live here for ten years, and come up with your own. It's all relative--we here in quebec watch news of our neighbors to the south, and sing "Halleluyah" we ain't there--it makes our place seem like Heaven, by comparison. Sorry.
ManhattanWhere i live, here in quebec, you sometimes see people walking around with "ZOO YORK" printed across their shirts in large letters. "New York" is the equivalent of "Manhattan"...I'm from The Bronx, which makes Manhattan seem like Shangri-la. (Aren't I cruel?!)
Rain ForestWe used to call it "jungle" in the old days, suggesting it was a forbidding place you wouldn't much care yo go to, unless you were Tarzan...
Desertan arid state of the soul--maybe have a look at ts Eliot's poem The Wasteland?
