Wikipedia
superconducting supercollider
The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) (also nicknamed the desertron) was a particle accelerator complex under construction in the vicinity of Waxahachie, Texas. Its planned ring circumference was 87.1 kilometers (54.1 mi) with an energy of 20 TeV per proton and was designed to be the world's largest and most energetic particle accelerator. The laboratory director was Roy Schwitters, a physicist at the University of Texas at Austin. Department of Energy administrator Louis Ianniello served as its first project director, followed by Joe Cipriano, who came to the SSC Project from the Pentagon in May 1990. After 22.5 km (14 mi) of tunnel had been bored and about 2 billion dollars spent, the project was cancelled by the US Congress in 1993.

superconducting supercollider
The Superconducting Supercollider (SSC) is a conceptualized particle accelerator complex intended to be the world's largest and most energetic. It was designed to collide protons at energy levels previously unseen in order to explore new realms of particle physics. The project, which was based in Texas, USA, started in the 1980s but was cancelled in 1993 due to budget issues. The term "superconducting" refers to the fact that it was designed to use superconducting magnets that would allow for more sustained and controllable particle acceleration.
