This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. It is the only surviving member of the genus Sarcoramphus, although fossil members are known. Large and predominantly white, the king vulture has gray to black ruff, flight, and tail feathers. The head and neck are bald, with the skin color varying, including yellow, orange, blue, purple, and red. The king vulture has a very noticeable orange fleshy caruncle on its beak. This vulture is a scavenger and it often makes the initial cut into a fresh carcass. It also displaces smaller New World vulture species from a carcass. 1. king vulture

A king vulture is a large bird found in Central and South America, known for its brightly colored head and neck. It is a scavenger by nature and feeds mostly on carrion. The king vulture is characterized by its predominantly white body, black tail and wings, and a unique yellow, orange, or red colored neck, which is devoid of feathers. They have a thick beak and often a noticeable fleshy crest or wattle on their beak. Despite its large size and intimidating appearance, it is not a bird of prey and does not typically kill its own food, instead preferring to consume the remains of animals that have died of other causes.
