In 2007, Jacqui Smith became the first female home secretary. The incumbent home secretary is Suella Braverman. The office holder works alongside the other Home Office ministers and the permanent under-secretary of state of the Home Office. The corresponding shadow minister is the shadow home secretary, and the performance of the home secretary is also scrutinized by the Home Affairs Select Committee and the Justice and Home Affairs Committee.

Examples of home secretary in a Sentence

  1. Clare Mosley:

For a British home secretary to accuse and castigate ordinary people when the facts of this incident are not yet even known is shocking and disturbing, this is not simply a careless, off-the-cuff emotional response. It is a misleading, opportunistic smoke screen concocted to deflect attention from the multiple warnings Clare Mosley has had about what was clearly going to happen at Napier Barracks.

  2. Adam Wagner:

The bill would prevent a large group of extremely vulnerable refugees from relying on human rights protections, by leaving it up to the Home Secretary to decide who should be protected and who should be deported – and excluding the courts almost entirely, for example, victims of modern slavery will not be able to use laws designed to protect them. This attacks the core idea of human rights that everyone is protected, and that states must, under the ECHR, give people access to an effective remedy.

  3. Hafsa Halawa:

The fascinating thing to me -- if I'm talking about the UK and( Home Secretary) Priti Patel's immigration point scheme that Priti Patel introduced -- is that my father as a qualified surgeon who went on to serve the NHS for 40 years, would not have qualified for a work visa when he arrived here, the mechanisms by which we -- in the developed world -- allowed people to learn and then keep them here to benefit society are no longer available.

  4. Diane Abbott:

Both the Prime Minister and his Home Secretary seemed more occupied about statues of slave traders being toppled than the death toll from the Atlantic slave trade.

  5. Sajid Javid:

I don't recognize any bit of that at all. As Home Secretary, as anyone would expect, I'm deeply involved in 'No Deal' preparations ... but I don't recognize any of that.
