Wiktionary
electromagnetic pulsenoun
A short-duration burst of high-intensity electromagnetic radiation generated by a physical event, in particular by a large thermonuclear explosion in the atmosphere. The pulse causes a damaging surge of voltage within electrical and electronic systems.
electromagnetic pulsenoun
Compton-recoil electrons and photoelectrons from photons scattered in the materials of a nuclear event causing electric and magnetic fields to couple with electrical and electronic systems to produce damaging current surges.
Wikipedia
Electromagnetic pulse
An electromagnetic pulse (EMP), also a transient electromagnetic disturbance (TED), is a brief burst of electromagnetic energy. Depending upon the source, the origin of an EMP can be natural or artificial, and can occur as an electromagnetic field, as an electric field, as a magnetic field, or as a conducted electric current. The electromagnetic interference caused by an EMP disrupts communications and damages electronic equipment; at higher levels of energy, an EMP such as a lightning strike can physically damage objects such as buildings and aircraft. The management of EMP effects is a branch of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineering. EMP weapons deliver high-energy EMP designed to disrupt unprotected infrastructure. In wartime, the most likely use would be to put the electrical network of the target country out of commission.
Wikidata
Electromagnetic pulse
An electromagnetic pulse is a burst of electromagnetic energy. It may occur in the form of a radiated, electric or magnetic pulse depending on the source. Electromagnetic pulse is commonly abbreviated EMP and pronounced by saying the letters separately. EMP is generally damaging to electronic equipment, and its management is an important branch of electromagnetic compatibility engineering.
Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms
electromagnetic pulse
