Samuel Johnson's Dictionary
Balsam Apple
momordica, Lat. An annual Indian plant.
The flower consists of one leaf, is of the expanded bell-shaped kind, but so deeply cut, as to appear composed of five distinct leaves: the flowers are some male, or barren; others female, growing upon the top of the embryo, which is afterwards changed into a fruit, which is fleshy, and sometimes more or less tapering and hollow, and, when ripe, usually bursts, and casts forth the seeds with an elasticity; which seeds are wrapped up in a membranous covering, and are, for the most part, indented on the edges. balsam apple
Balsam Apple, scientifically known as Momordica balsamina, is a tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae, widely cultivated for its medicinal values. It produces orange-yellow fruits that split open at maturity to expose red seeds, and its unripe fruit and leaves are used for treating a variety of ailments. This plant is also referred to as Bitter Gourd or Bitter Melon in some regions. It is not, however, related to the common apple and it takes its name from the apple-like shape of its fruit.
