Sayeret Matkal
General Staff Reconnaissance Unit (formerly Unit 269 or Unit 262), more commonly known as Sayeret Matkal (Hebrew: סיירת מטכ״ל) is the special reconnaissance unit (sayeret) of Israel's General Staff (matkal). It is the tier 1 prime Special forces of Israel of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).First and foremost a field intelligence-gathering unit, conducting deep reconnaissance behind enemy lines to obtain strategic intelligence, Sayeret Matkal is also tasked with black operation, clandestine operation, combat search and rescue, counterterrorism, hostage rescue, humint, irregular warfare, long-range penetration, manhunt, special opeartions, and special reconnaissance beyond Israel's borders. The unit is modeled after the British Army's Special Air Service (SAS), taking the unit's motto "Who Dares Wins". The unit is the Israeli equivalent of the SAS and the U.S. Army's 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force). It is directly subordinate to the Special Operations Branch of the IDF's Directorate of Military Intelligence.

First and foremost a field intelligence-gathering unit, conducting deep reconnaissance behind enemy lines to obtain strategic intelligence, Sayeret Matkal is also tasked with counter-terrorism and hostage rescue beyond Israel's borders. It is known in the IDF as "the Unit". The unit is best known for Operation Thunderbolt, commonly known as Operation Entebbe, in which it rescued more than 100 Air France passengers hijacked and flown to Uganda by PFLP-EO terrorists, killing 52 enemy combatants while losing only the assault element commander, Yonatan Netanyahu, and three hostages.
