    Plato's Academy was an institution of higher learning founded by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato around 387 BC in Athens. It was one of the earliest known organized schools in Western civilization and was intended to provide a thorough grounding in philosophy as well as general education. It was named after a legendary Greek hero, Akademos, and the term "academy" was derived from the place where it was based. The school offered studies in various fields including philosophy, mathematics, and politics. Some of its notable students included Aristotle and Speusippus. It lasted until 86 BC when it was destroyed by the Romans.
