Old french : lamper = to gulp.
Derived from french 'lampe' = same as english 'lamp'.
ie: French Etymology : swallow the 'quantity of alcohol needed to fill a lamp'.
English lump is pronounced 'lamp' by posh people of anglo-norman origin.
Hence : swallow a lump (of meat), = (lump in my throat).
