Eyal Press writes in The New Yorker. Audm subscribers can listen to that article.)In the rest of today’s newsletter, we look more closely at the 10 states.Furthest alongInitiatives seem most likely to happen soon in two states. In Ohio, a coalition of abortion rights groups is collecting signatures to place an initiative on the ballot this year that would protect access through roughly the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. For now, most abortions remain legal in Ohio, thanks to a court ruling blocking a ban.In South Dakota, organizers are optimistic that they can collect the signatures needed for an initiative next year. It is a compromise measure that would seek to reinstate the minimum access required by the Roe v. Wade decision. All abortions would be legal in the first trimester (roughly 12 weeks), and some would be in the second trimester.Early effortsIn several other states, efforts have begun, but they’re less advanced. In Missouri, advocates have not yet settled on one approach. Some petitions — an early step to putting an initiative on the ballot — would protect most abortion access until 24 weeks of pregnancy. Others would be narrower and let the state enact parental consent laws.In Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a near-total ban, advocates are hoping to place an initiative on the ballot that would allow most abortions until 24 weeks. But the state’s pro-marijuana movement helps highlight the slowness of the effort: Organizers of a 2024 ballot initiative to legalize marijuana have already raised $30 million and collected nearly all the required signatures — while organizers of an abortion initiative are just getting started.Arizona has tough rules for ballot initiatives, requiring hundreds of thousands of signatures on a petition.

Social media provides a lifeline for many young people, in addition to community, education, and conversation, they use it in part because it can be private … The law, which would limit social media access and require parental consent and monitoring for minors, will incalculably harm the ability of young people to protect their privacy and deter them from exercising their rights.

When Youngkin and DeSantis do things like this, they aren’t taking into account the discrimination that can result, if parental rights are constantly about gender identity and critical race theory, it doesn’t seem to be about education. It seems to me it’s about making sure I can shield my kid from anything other than what I want them to know.

We are gratified that Secretary Cardona's Potemkin village 'Parents Council' will be disbanded, because families should never be used merely as props to advance progressive policies, parental engagement is essential for students to succeed; accordingly, it is critical that ALL voices and perspectives be integrated into any feedback mechanism that the Biden Administration operates - and that the Department of Education respect the rule of law.

They are getting into areas that are parental rights areas, and you should be able to have conversations with your children based on your own personal values, about what you think about gender identity or any kind of identity affirmation as it pertains to your children, and they're basically what we're seeing is public school is crossing into a jurisdiction where they don't belong in.

To protect themselves, it's very important for same-sex couples to secure their parentage by obtaining a court order of adoption or order of parentage from a court since court orders are entitled to full faith and credit, couples -- especially in hostile states -- should not rely on their marriage, or both being on the birth certificate, to secure their parental relationship to their child.

This is too little too late from this Administration, which has made abundantly clear through its actions that it views actual parental input as an inconvenience; let’s remember, this is the same set of bureaucrats that coordinated for weeks with the National School Board Association on its since-retracted letter which cited the Patriot Act, the organizations hand-picked to participate do not speak for the views of most American parents; if they did, we would not have seen such a groundswell of activism over the past few years. Families came to the sobering realization that groups like the National PTA were as ideologically compromised as the elected officials that abandoned our children. I would have hoped the Biden Administration would realize the importance of bringing many perspectives to the table - but I am not surprised that other voices are not welcome.

The Biden Administration needs to wake up and learn that it is not acceptable to use children for an experimental woke agenda, by pushing to expand access to dangerous cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers for minors without parental consent, Biden’s Executive Order threatens the physical and mental health – and futures – of our nation’s children. It’s also an unprecedented power grab, using the stroke of a pen to bully governors and parents who are simply trying to protect kids in their state.

It’s ironic that the Biden administration continues to claim their policies only support ‘affirming care’ while simultaneously defending and promoting permanent, harmful, and irreversible sex-change operations for children, we have remained consistent that in Florida we must protect children and parental rights, and our Medicaid program should not be paying for medical experiments.

Opening schools in person is an extremely low bar when it comes to empowering parents and providing children with an adequate education, sending a child back to a failing government-run school that wasn't meeting their needs to begin with is unlikely to fix much of anything. The only real solution is to fund students directly and empower families to choose the education providers that best meet their needs. School choice is the only way to truly secure parental rights in education – and it would provide meaningful bottom-up accountability because families could vote with their feet. Only then will schools have real incentives to cater to the needs of families as opposed to the other way around.

They're following the Political Science, the underperformance of Democrats in November likely served as a wake-up call for politicians embracing restrictions. Polling likely nudged these politicians towards relaxing mandates. But whether the rollback is because of a genuine change of heart or due to political pressure, the result is the same: families have more freedom to choose. At the same time, choosing whether your child wears a mask at school is an extremely low bar when it comes to parental rights in education.
