One reason for( the) reduction in Atlantic seasonal hurricane forecast from Colorado State University is due to development of below-normal sea surface temperatures in subtropical Atlantic, when the subtropical Atlantic is cooler than normal, it can sometimes favor increased shear in the tropical Atlantic.

The models are generally forecasting a more conducive pattern for the Atlantic by the time that we get to the middle of August, air is forecast to more consistently rise over Africa and sink over the tropical Pacific. This pattern should result in reduced vertical wind shear.

Other factors are more important for Gulf hurricanes, wind shear, mid-level moisture and having pre-existing disturbances that develop once they reach the Gulf( or track into the Gulf from elsewhere). Of course, if all those conditions are already there and the waters are warmer than normal, that could certainly exacerbate issues.

Because the storms were incredibly shallow, that limited the growth of the parent supercell, which is why so little precipitation was falling, fully formed supercells have a much better ability to harness the low-level shear into the atmosphere in order to produce a tornado.

We never know what we're going to find, yet we always have to be thinking two or three steps ahead. So that really makes us need to think about the meteorology [ in each particular storm ], is it a closed low or an open wave ? Maybe it's closed but just elongated ? Is it battling shear ? Are there several smaller swirls competing to be the main circulation center ? Weak storms and invests can be very tricky and require a lot of thinking on our toes.

A lot of that is going to depend on where the surface low moves and how far north the warm front gets, the primary threat is going to be damaging winds. There will be some threat for hail. There is enough shear, so we can't rule out the possibility of tornadoes, but the primary threat will be damaging winds.

When dust veils like this occur, they tend to put a lid on atmospheric convection over areas favorable for tropical storm development, add to this the impact of the El Nio, which favors stronger-than-average winds across the Atlantic basin-- which tend to shear apart any rising motion -- and you have a recipe for a below-average hurricane season.
