The Wu dialect, also known as Wuyue or Shanghai dialect, is a group of linguistically similar and historically related varieties of Chinese primarily spoken in Zhejiang province, the municipality of Shanghai, and southern Jiangsu province. Its speakers also populate regions in Fujian, Jiangxi, Anhui, and beyond. It is named after the ancient Wu kingdom, a region in what is now southern Jiangsu that is considered the ancestral homeland of the Wu people. It is one of the most spoken variants of Chinese, second only to Mandarin.
