vulcanization, vulcanisationnoun
process of treating rubber or rubberlike materials with sulphur at great heat to improve elasticity and strength or to harden them
Wiktionary
vulcanizationnoun
A process by which rubber is hardened using heat and sulphur.
Wikipedia
Vulcanization
Vulcanization (British: Vulcanisation) is a range of processes for hardening rubbers. The term originally referred exclusively to the treatment of natural rubber with sulfur, which remains the most common practice. It has also grown to include the hardening of other (synthetic) rubbers via various means. Examples include silicone rubber via room temperature vulcanizing and chloroprene rubber (neoprene) using metal oxides. Vulcanization can be defined as the curing of elastomers, with the terms 'vulcanization' and 'curing' sometimes used interchangeably in this context. It works by forming cross-links between sections of polymer chain which results in increased rigidity and durability, as well as other changes in the mechanical and electrical properties of the material. Vulcanization, in common with the curing of other thermosetting polymers, is generally irreversible. The word vulcanization is derived from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge.

vulcanization
Vulcanization is a chemical process where rubber is heated with sulphur to improve its durability, elasticity and strength. This process creates cross-links between the rubber's polymer chains, thus making the rubber more resistant to heat, cold, and mechanical wear and tear. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of tires, shoe soles, and other rubber products.
Webster Dictionary
Vulcanizationnoun
the act or process of imparting to caoutchouc, gutta-percha, or the like, greater elasticity, durability, or hardness by heating with sulphur under pressure
Etymology: [See Vulcan.]

Vulcanization
Vulcanization or vulcanisation is a chemical process for converting rubber or related polymers into more durable materials via the addition of sulfur or other equivalent "curatives" or "accelerators". These additives modify the polymer by forming crosslinks between individual polymer chains. Vulcanized materials are less sticky and have superior mechanical properties. A vast array of products are made with vulcanized rubber including tires, shoe soles, hoses, conveyor belts and hockey pucks. The process is named after Vulcan, Roman god of fire. Hard vulcanized rubber is sometimes sold under the brand names ebonite or vulcanite, and is used to make hard articles such as bowling balls and saxophone mouth pieces.
