Tenuazonic acid
Tenuazonic acid is a mycotoxin produced by Alternaria species. It is a powerful eukaryotic protein synthesis inhibitor. It is a tetrameric acid that is ubiquitous in biological environments and prevents the release of newly synthesized protein from the ribosome. Its toxicity is the highest among all Alternaria mycotoxins and has both phytotoxic and cytotoxic properties. In 1991 Tenuazonic acid was reported to inhibit skin tumor promotion in mice.

Tenuazonic acid is a mycotoxin. It is a toxic secondary metabolite, produced by Alternaria and Phoma species. It inhibits the protein synthesis machinery. Tenuazonic acid or 5S,6S-3-acetyl-5-sec-butyl-4-hydroxypyrrolidone-2,4-dione is a colorless oil, soluble in chloroform and methanol. In 1991 Tenuazonic acid was reported to inhibit skin tumor promotion in mice

3-Acetyl-5-sec-butyl-4-hydroxy-3-pyrrolin-2-one. A metabolite found in a strain of the fungus Alternaria tenuis Auct. which functions as an antibiotic with antiviral and antineoplastic properties, and may also act as a mycotoxin.
